Community meeting,

Monday, November 9 (7pm) at Most Holy Rosary Parish Center

to learn about a proposal to place the

Onondaga Highlands-Swaneola Heights Historic District

on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.

This could be the second historic district in Strathmore, following the designation of the Strathmore-By-The-Park district a couple of years ago.  Not coincidentally, that area has seen higher average real estate values than the rest of the neighborhood.  The proposed Onondaga Highlands-Swaneola Heights Historic District would be bounded by Bellevue Avenue on the north, Onondaga Avenue (and Terrace) on the east, Crossett Street on the south, and Clairmonte Avenue on the west. Representatives of OPRHP, as well as the GSNA, will be at the meeting to explain why the area has been nominated to the State and National Registers, and what a listing on the Registers means.  For additional information on the State and National Registers please refer to the enclosed Frequently Asked Questions about the State and National Registers of Historic Places in New York State.  For questions about this public meeting and the district, please contact either Chris Capella-Peters of the Central New York Regional Office of OPRHP at 315-492-1756 or Tony Opalka of the Albany office at 518-237-8643 x3278.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE THAT PARTICIPATED, SUPPORTED, VOLUNTEERED, AND CHEERED AT PARKS RUN 2009 ON SEPTEMBER 27. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 1st PLACE MALE AND FEMALE WINNERS:  RICHARD TERPENING (24:03) AND MAGGIE MOCETE (28:23).  Maggie is a Strathmore neighbor and a Corcoran student.  Maggie and Terpening both set race recordsIn fact, the top 3 male finishers beat Terpening's previous Parks Run 4 Mile race record of 24:32 and the 4th place finisher, who came down from Fort Drum to compete for first place and the record, just missed it.  16 year old Colin O'Neill (a student at Corcoran) was the 1st Strathmore neighbor to cross the finish line in 24:52 and placed 5th overall.  Although, this was the eighth annual Parks Run, it was only the fourth year as a 4 mile race.  Before that it was a 5K (3.1 miles) distance. The results can be found at www.StrathmoreParksRun.com
Despite a soggy day, Parks Run 2009 had more participants than each of the last two years.  Weather didn't dampen the spirit of those that showed up, though, as each runner in the 4 mile race and Kids Fun Run enjoyed Gannon's Homemade Ice Cream after the race.  Special thanks to our primary sponsor, the Jim Dwyer, Jr. Memorial Fund.

Strathmore Saturdays done for the summer...
Can't wait until next year.

"Strathmore Saturdays" are when the Syracuse Parks Department, closes the roads in Upper Onondaga Park to automobile traffic...

...making it a great place for people of all ages to bicycle, rollerblade, run, or stroll!

The hours of "Strathmore Saturdays" are 7:00am -11:30am every Saturday morning from Memorial Day until Labor Day.   Who doesn't love a car-free park?

"Art on the Porches" festival

is like no other

This annual community/cultural event is on the Saturday before Father's Day and has about 45 artists that show and sell their work (many on the historic porches of Strathmore homes), a great line-up of musicians and entertainers, and delicious food from local restauranteurs like Funk'n'waffles, Lao Village, Caribbean King, and Tall Paul's Dog Cabin.  The Hands-On Art Center is busy all day with kids of all ages making their own masterpieces.  Make sure to attend our 10th Anniversary Celebration in 2010.

HOT Trend: Strathmore home address plaques.

Have you seen the new address plaques that many neighbors have placed on their homes?  These plaques were a joint effort between the Greater Strathmore Neighborhood Association and Home HeadQuarters, Inc.   Over 150 plaques have been ordered by neighbors.  What a great way to show your neighborhood pride and our sense of community!  You can find a March 2008 Post Standard news article written about the address plaques in the Strathmore News section of this site.

Happy Halloween 2007!  The 3rd annual Strathmore Childrens Halloween Parade brought in over 40 young kids and their families. Luck was on us, as the only dry spell of the day was during the time of the parade and treats & cider in Onondaga Park.

Parks Run 2007!and they're off

Parks Run is a 4 mile run/walk that goes through Onondaga Park, the historic Strathmore neighborhood, and around the Woodland Reservoir recently on Sunday, October 14.  It was a good turnout, the weather was decent, the park and neighborhood looked great, and a lot of people had a lot of fun.  Congratulations to the 1st place male finisher, Kevin Zych (15 Years old!), with a time of 25:34 and the 1st place female finisher, Lisa King in 30:10.  Jake Copich, (only 13 years old!), was the 1st Strathmore neighbor to cross the finish line and placed 9th overall.  Abby Crain was the 1st female Strathmore runner for the 2nd straight year.

What a great day it was for the 7th Annual Art on the Porches event and the Strathmore By-the-Park Homes Tour in the Strathmore Neighborhood on June 16th!

Hundreds of people viewed 5 historic homes next to or nearby Onondaga Park.  They were able to see the well-preserved architecture and charm not found in newer built homes.  And over a thousand people to came to view the art, enjoy the music and dancing, and sample the food at this year's Art on the Porches on Ruskin Ave.  It was truly a great day in the city.  Special thanks to Charlene Bozzi for coordinating this year's Art on the Porches, to all of the volunteers & sponsors that helped support these events, and to everyone that came and had a good time.
